Q&A with Maranda & Penny of Vintage Gems

Maranda Fleming and Penny Dyer Greene have been in contact with us at the Barn Sale Business since almost the beginning. I have enjoyed working and getting to know them both! I love the electric, funky junky, hippie vibe they portray thru their personalities and creativity. No doubt they love rust, dust and vintage! Just like from thier interview, “Saving items from the past and giving them new life is what initially inspired us to start the sale.” I love that! I think that is the bottom line for all us in this barn sale industry! I can’t for my readers to get a glimpse into their lives and their annual Vintage Gems Barn Sale, the next one in just 1 month May 16 & 17th in Cookeville, Tennessee.

1. Where are you from? Penny is a Cookeville native and the barn sale takes place on her family’s farm.  Maranda is from the small town of Red Boiling Springs originally, but moved to Cookeville 3 years ago.

2. Where did the name Vintage Gems originate from? After a few days brainstorming and writing down items that we love.  Vintage Gems was a perfect fit for us.

3. What was your initial dream for your business? Maranda started going to barn sales in 2010 when The Strawberry Patch was still a very small venue.  I loved the items and feel of that back yard setting.  When her sale grew and moved locations I got Penny to go with me to her first Barn Sale.  We both have a love for repurposed items so I knew she would enjoy it!  After a few years of attending different barn sales we decided that we wanted to provide a small and quaint venue for vendors to sell their treasures.  It was something we have a passion for and knew that if we could have fun and be able to offer one of a kind pieces to customer then it would all be worth it.  Our first sale was in October 2013 and it all came about in just a couple months, but was a huge success!

4. What are your long term goals for your business? We want to offer the venue as long as vendors and customers find it a fun experience and keep coming back.

5. What was your best lesson learned? You can’t control everything so don’t stress over the sale.  Each vendor’s booth has its own personality and style and in the end it all comes together beautifully.

6. What was your worst lesson learned? We didn’t have anything negative happen at the first sell.  All of the positive comments encouraged us to have it again.

7. What inspires you? Saving items from the past and giving them new life is what initially inspired us to start the sale.  After our first sale and all of the nice people and vendors you get to know and all of their positive feedback inspired us to do it again!

8. What is your best avenue to get your business noticed? Social media is the best way we’ve found to reach people outside of our community.  We also find that placing flyers in shops where your target customer will be shopping is another good way to spread the word.

9. Who is one person you look up to? Business or personal. We both look up to our mother’s tremendously.  I (Maranda) can remember going to antique stores at a young age with my mom and I hated it! LOL.  Now I have a respect vintage/antique items and that came from my mother. Even if our styles are a little different it’s something that we can do together and enjoy.

Our sale actually takes place at Penny’s mom’s house/farm.  She graciously gives up her peace and quiet for the sale.  Only a mother would do that!  She is also a huge help in getting things prepared for the sale, which is the biggest and messiest job!

10. What is something you look forward to the most at the barn sale? We are most looking forward to seeing all the items that the vendors have and the smiles on happy customers.
